If your scheme commands a hardwood floor of strength and gravitas, then our deep smoked, Ancient Dark hand-aged, engineered oak flooring just has to be the centre of your mood board. Filled with enhanced oak traits such as knots & clefts, these natural oak characteristics are celebrated rather than diminished. With the carefully considered hand-distressing, which incorporates a myriad of techniques applied to every board, the natural & artisanal combine and flourish to create a dark oak floor of supreme beauty and timeless style.Ancient Dark antiqued and aged engineered oak flooring is a sublime, deep smoked oak, in the guise of a vintage, time-trodden oak board. Being, engineered this gorgeous, hand-aged & antiqued oak is perfect for modern installations including those where underfloor heating is desired. Through various hand-aging methods, the character traits of this rustic oak are brought to the fore, and an authentic seasoned & established, historic oak floor look is formed. Perfect for those projects that demand a matured oak floor, our Ancient Dark oak flooring comes in a stunning 24cm wide plank, making it an ideal choice for large living areas though of course it can be utilised for smaller spaces that would benefit from an injection of scale.
Finished with a matte hardwax oil, which gives the oak a lovely, subtle patina, our Ancient Dark engineered oak boards offer a resilient finish which is extremely easy to clean and maintain. Marrying desirability with practicality, Ancient Dark offers a stunning, timeworn look aesthetic that will form the cornerstone of your project.
Design Tip: You can of course complement the warmth of this natural oak floor with warm whites, beiges or taupes. However consider other tones than these ‘safe’ ones – we recommend trying a light sage green with warm grey or brown undertones – particularly Sage Green, Boringdon Green & Normandy Grey, all from Little Greene, work beautifully with this smoked oak floor.
Our Ancient collection of antiqued and distressed oak flooring provides the unparalleled look and feel of vintage oak but in a stable, engineered board making it suitable for modern installations and with underfloor heating.

Grade | RUSTIC GRADE: Rustic grade wood has the largest range of colour variation, sap content and allows almost a limitless size and number of knots. There will be checks (stable splits) across & between the growth rings, all of which add to its natural charm. Filler will be used and the colour is traditionally dark, carefully selected to compliment the oak rather than to match it or ‘disappear’. Rustic grade oak produces a stunning, traditional vintage looking floor. |
Glue-Down | We recommend fixing engineered oak, where possible, with the Glue-down method. Using a high-quality adhesive will result in the most stable floor installation as the base of each board is bonded directly to the sub-floor. No underlay is needed and no gluing of the tongue and groove is required. We recommend Bona Quantum flexible wood flooring adhesive though many other brands are available – speak with your installer as they will likely have a tried and tested product they can supply. |
Floating | Glue-down method is not appropriate for sub-floors that are damp, are mixed i.e. timber subfloor combined with concrete/screed sub-floor or have specific requirements such as acoustic deadening. With sub-floors of this type the Floating installation method will likely be proposed by your installer. The boards are not fixed to the sub-floor but instead uses the weight of the floor itself to keep them in place, usually with the use of an underlay between the sub-floor and boards. The tongue & groove would normally be glued in a floating installation. NB: Beswick stone do not provide underlay, glue or any other wood installation product. |
Blending | Shade and colour variation should be expected in our real timber engineered oak products. Each board will react differently to the finishing processes used and have unique characteristics such as knots and highlighted grain. Stronger tone & colour variation can occur between batches, so it is recommended you ensure you order enough for your project in one batch. As always when laying real timber flooring a good number of packs should be opened at a time and blended. |
Cleaning | The Bona Premium Spray Mop for Oiled Wood Floor is the easiest and most effective way of cleaning oiled wood floors in the home. Simply spray and wipe the floor clean. It cleans and nourishes your oiled wood floor while providing extra protection. |
